Kaziranga – the land of giants, famous for India’s big 4 – the Tiger, the elephant, the rhino and the wild buffalo. Some also include the rare swamp deer as the 5th big. But the deer is hardly big although it is a beautiful golden deer. Kaziranga is also a land of superlatives. It has highest density of Tigers in India, it is one of Indias best managed national parks and is also one of the most scenic national parks of India. Kaziranga is also one of India’s greatest conservation success stories. The jewel in the crown of Kaziranga is the Indian one horned rhinoceros. In the 1930s, there were less than 20 rhinos here. Poaching and habitat loss had decimated its population. Today there are more than 1500 rhinos here, and about the same number of wild buffalo and elephants. Along with the rhino, Kaziranga remains one of the best places in the world to see the wild buffalo. The wild buffalo of Kaziranga have the longest spread of horns of any animal in the world.
